What Are Cognitive Biases?

Cognitive biases are systematic patterns in how human brains process information. They are different from logical fallacies. A logical fallacy is an error in reasoning structure; a cognitive bias is an error in how your brain perceives, remembers, or interprets information. Biases are not character flaws—they are features of human cognition that evolved for good reasons but often mislead us in modern contexts. Understanding your own biases is one of the most important aspects of critical thinking.

Biases exist because the human brain is an efficiency machine. Your brain receives more sensory information every second than it can consciously process. So it uses shortcuts, or heuristics, to make quick decisions without exhausting your mental resources. These shortcuts usually work well. If you see a shape in tall grass and your brain quickly categorizes it as "potentially dangerous," that quick inference protects you. But the same shortcut can mislead: a stick in the grass is categorized as dangerous when it is not.

The key insight is that biases are not corrected by being smart. Intelligence actually correlates with some biases—educated people can be very good at justifying biased conclusions with sophisticated arguments. Critical thinking means becoming aware of your biases and implementing strategies to counteract them, even when (especially when) your reasoning feels confident.

Decision-Making Biases

Confirmation bias is the tendency to seek, interpret, and remember information in ways that confirm what you already believe. If you believe climate change is a serious threat, you notice and remember studies confirming it while overlooking contradictory evidence. If you are skeptical, you do the opposite. This bias is one of the most pervasive obstacles to critical thinking. To counteract it, deliberately seek disconfirming evidence. Ask: What would change my mind? What are the strongest arguments against my position? Why might I be wrong?

Anchoring bias makes you overly reliant on the first piece of information you receive. If a retailer lists the original price as $500 and then discounts to $300, you perceive the deal as better than if the first price mentioned was $300. The "anchor" of $500 shapes your judgment even though it is irrelevant. In negotiations, whoever suggests a number first has an advantage because it anchors expectations. To reduce anchoring, generate your own estimates before hearing others' numbers and actively question why particular numbers are being emphasized.

Availability heuristic makes recent or vivid information seem more important than it is. After seeing news coverage of plane crashes, people overestimate the danger of flying while underestimating the danger of driving (which kills far more people). Vivid examples are more available to memory than statistics. Counter this by seeking base rates and statistical information rather than relying on what springs to mind.

Sunk cost fallacy makes you continue investing in something because of prior investment, even when the prior investment is irrelevant to the future decision. "I have already spent $2,000 on this car repair, so I should spend another $3,000 to keep it running" ignores the fact that the $2,000 is already spent and cannot be recovered. The future decision should be based on whether future benefits exceed future costs, not on past costs. To avoid this, always ask: What is the decision now, and what are its future costs and benefits? Past investments are irrelevant.

Social Biases

Authority bias makes you overweight the opinions of authority figures. A person wearing a doctor's coat is perceived as more credible even if they are not actually a doctor. Politicians and celebrities influence beliefs beyond their actual expertise. Authority is relevant when the authority actually has expertise, but the bias makes us trust authority even when it is not deserved. Counter this by asking: Is this person actually an expert in this domain? Do they have conflicts of interest? What evidence supports their claim independent of their authority?

Conformity bias (also called groupthink) makes you adopt beliefs and behaviors to fit in with a group. If everyone in your department thinks a policy is good, you are more likely to think so too, even if you have not carefully evaluated it. This bias was dramatically demonstrated in Solomon Asch's conformity experiments, where people would agree with obviously wrong answers if the group did. To resist, protect your right to dissent and actively seek diverse opinions.

Ingroup bias makes you favor information and people associated with your group (political party, nationality, profession, etc.). You interpret ambiguous behavior charitably if it is by an ingroup member and harshly if by an outgroup member. You seek information confirming the ingroup is good and outgroup is bad. To counteract, consciously practice perspective-taking. Ask: How might someone from the opposing group interpret this? What are the strongest arguments from the other side?

Dunning-Kruger effect makes people with minimal knowledge overestimate their expertise, while genuine experts are more aware of what they don't know. Someone who has read one book on neuroscience might overestimate their understanding, while a neuroscientist knows how vast and complex the field is. This bias makes overconfidence most dangerous in domains where you have limited knowledge. Counter it by actively learning the scope of what is unknown in any field before claiming expertise.

Debiasing Strategies

Since biases are automatic and unconscious, you cannot eliminate them by willpower alone. Instead, use structural strategies. First, slow down your thinking. Biases thrive when you rely on quick intuition. When stakes are high or you feel very confident, force yourself to think analytically. Second, seek disconfirming evidence. Before making a decision, spend time looking for reasons you might be wrong.

Third, consider the opposite. Write out the strongest case against your position. Fourth, expose yourself to diverse perspectives. Surround yourself with people who think differently; this naturally exposes you to counterarguments. Fifth, use a checklist of biases and deliberately ask whether each one might be influencing your thinking on important decisions.

Finally, have others challenge you. Someone outside your thought process can spot biases you cannot see yourself. The most sophisticated organizations and teams build in formal devil's advocates or pre-mortems (imagining a project failed and working backward to explain why) to counteract group biases. You can use the same techniques individually or in teams to improve decision-making.
